General description
Mongolia undoubtedly is a country of horses. Horses always have played an important role in the lives, culture and history of the Mongolian nomads. Just think, on the backs of those short horses Chinggis Khaan was able to conquer half of the world. Therefore Mongolia is the perfect place for true riders and horse lovers. During this trip you will have a lot of riding involved beginning from the banks of Khuvsgul Lake to the Taiga, home of reindeer breeders. The trails are oftentimes mild but as you move forward in the extreme north, it gets challenging yet adventurous. You will enjoy pristine nature, spectacular landscapes together with rich history and culture of the people.

ITINERARY HORSE TREKKING
Day1. Going to Amarbayasgalant Monastery
Ulaanbaatar – Amarbayasgalant 350km
• We take the road towards Amarbayasgalant Monastery. It's the most important monastery of Mongolia, it was built in the 18th century in the memory of the first Bogd Gegeen Zanabazar who was at the head of the Mongolian religion. Located North of the province of Selenge, the monastery enjoys exceptional surroundings.
• Stay overnight in the nomadic family ger or tourist ger camp.
Day2. Going to the natural park of extinct volcanos
Amarbayasgalant – UranTogoo 260km
• Visit of Amarbayasgalant Monastery.
• We cut across wheat fields and large cultures and reach Erdenet. It's one of the most important economic centres of the country. It has one of the largest open-air mines of the world (copper mine).
• Journey to the UranTogoo National Park.
• Stay overnight in the nomadic family’s ger or tourist ger camp
Day 3-4. Khovsgol, little Mongolian Switzerland
UranTogoo – via Moron – Khovsgol Lake
• We have get border permit from Murun city because we are visiting Reindeer family.
• We arrive at Lake Khovsgol, one of the natural wonders of the world. This mountain covers an area of 2760 square kms, and its water is so pure that we can drink it ! It's surrounded with many peaks culminating at more than 2000 metres and covered with forests of pines and lush meadows where yaks and horses graze
• Let's start a beautiful story... With local breeders and their yaks, we leave for our 2-days hike or horse-trek in the tree-filled valleys of AlagSar. Following the peaceful tempo of the cart, we discover this land of nomadism. In the heart of summer, the area is flowered and we will move literally on a carpet of edelweiss, while at West, we will see on the opposite bank the peaks culminating at 3000 metres that bathe in the crystal water of the lake. In the evening, with the breeders, we will put up the yurt that we carried, in which we will spend the night.

Day 5-6.Ulaan Uul and Tsagaan Nuur village
Khovsgol Lake – via Ulaan uul – Tsagaan Nuur Lake 300km
• We leave the majestic steppe of Ulaan uul to start the "area of thousand lakes". Breathtaking landscapes, with steppes and small lakes, follow another. We cross the Khar Us River by Mongolian "ferry boat", before passing a pass where we'll stop near the ovoo in honour of the spirit of the mountain.
• We go on our way until the great Lake Tsagaan Nuur, where we set up our camp.
• Stay overnight: tent camping
Day 7. Ride in the taiga
Tsagaan nuur - Moorog Uul
• We take on the most difficult part of our trek across taiga landscapes. Taiga is a transition change between boreal forest and and arctic tundra; bushes, low conifers and birches make up its vegetation. Forming a kind of natural barrier protecting the camps of the Dukhans, in Summer the wild and uninhabited becones harsh: unfortunately, marshes, flies and mosquitos are present. In the late afternoon, we set up our camp by the Moorog River and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Day 8-9. Stays among reindeer breeders
Moorog Uul - Tsaatan camp 50km
• We still ride towards North across the mountainous taiga. Dukhans or Tsaatans live in tepees, and not in yurts, and they exclusivelyearn their living with reindeer traditional breeding, source of food, clothes and exchange money. There are only 44 families left, totalizing 200 to 400 persons. They have a social and material tradition that remained unchanged for centuries. Shamanism and totamic rituals are in the centre of their social organization. In the early afternoon, we can see in the distance the first tepees. Reindeer eat lichens and mosses. High mountains surround us and leads us in the magic of a travel at the ends of the earth. Sit in the tepee, have a tea with reindeer milk... Here is the beginning of our encounter with this ancestral people.

Day 10-11. Stay with Tsaatan family
• This day is dedicated to the discovery of the Tsaatan people. Traditionally, it is the traveller who comes and meets his/her host, so take the time to go into tepees, to share a moment with different families. Observe, participate in daily tasks, up the reindeer, listen to stories, myths and legends, and learn some games. A part of the day will be devoted to shamanism peculiar to the spirituality of the Tsaatans. After sharing your meal and evening with a family, you can fall asleep away from prying eyes in a tepee in reindeer skin in the camp of Tsaatans.

Day 12-13. Back to the taiga in the South of Dukhan camps
Tsaatan camp - Tsagaan nuur
• After a wonderful adventure among the Tsaatans, it's time to find back the horses. We resume our horseback ride towards South, back to Tsagaan Nuur. We continue our ride through the taiga and at the end of the second day, we reach the banks of the lake where we set up our camp.
Day 13
• Ride horse. We will arrive Tsagaan nuurvilliage around lunch time. Afternoon relaxing time.
• Stay overnight in theguesthouse
Day14. In the mountains of Khoridol
Khoridol - Uvur Khoridol
• Some delicate passages : we have to cross the dry river beds and move among the pebbles. Then, we'll find a hilly area surrounded by high peaks, where gallops will be possible. We go higher above the sea level and set up our camp on the slopes of Euveur Khoridol Mount, near the forest where wolves can sometimes be heard.
• Stay overnight camping out /tent/
Day 15. Let's go for the central steppes
Alag Tsar –via Moron –Zuun Lake 320km
• Visit of the site containing several deer stones at Uushigiin Övör.
• Stop in Mörön to buy fresh supplies at the market.
• Journey towards centre. The track passes through many passes, we go deeper in remote valleys, and the landscapes quickly change. The passes are more than 2000 metres above the sea level. Landscapes get more and more lovely and photo opportunities more and more numerous.
• Camping on the banks of Lake Zuun, magnificently nestled in the heart of the steppe.

Day 16. The great white lake of Mongolia
Zuun Lake - Terkhiin Tsagaan national park 180km
• Road to Khorgo – Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur Natural Park that is located 2060 metres (1,28 mile) above the sea level. This lake, called "the great white lake", and its whole volcanic surroundings, are the emblematic area of the province of Arkhangai. The waters of the lake are full of fish and it's possible to fish if you wish.
• Hiking along the banks of the lake. We go towards Southeast where Khorgo Volcano reaches its highest point at 2240 metres (1,39 mile). (Easy) ascent of the volcano. From the top, we enjoy a splendid view on the lake and the surrounding hills. Nearby the volcano, stunning lava flows form an original landscape never seen up to now.

Day 17. Relaxing in Tsenkher hot springs
Terkhiin Tsagaan national park – via Tsetserleg– Hot spring 200km
• Stop at Tsetserleg, small lovely village nested in mountains of larches. We'll buy fresh supplies at the local market and visit ZayanGegeen Museum.
• Arrival at Tsenkher hot springs, where you can lounge in the pools of hot water of the camp.
• Stay overnight in theAltannutag tourist camp
Day 18. Change of scene in the Semi-Gobi
• We arrive at the splendid rocky formations of Khogno Khan. Discovery of the park :semidesert steppes, taiga, stunning rocky formations, 80-kilometres (49,71 miles) long sand dunes, are characteristic of this arid area nicknamed "Semi-Gobi".
• Walk until Erdene Khambiin Monastery. "Monk Erdene's Monastery" dates from 17th century and was built in the mountain. Zanabazar built it in honour of his teacher, monk Erdene.
• Visit of the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai. Ride camel
• Stay overnight in the nomadic family’ger or tourist ger camp.
Day19. Back to Ulaanbaatar

ADVICE TOUR
Please do not hesitate to contact me immediately. I advise a lot. Please prepare suitable clothing to run by bicycle. There is a temperature difference between day and night, so please bring more clothing change. Because rainy day is also assumed, please bring clothes that are difficult to get wet. Flashlights and lights are of course necessities.
